Beginning Band Camp marks the first step in our 5th and 6th graders’ musical pathway, and what an exciting start it was! On Saturday, August 23, at Catalina Foothills High School, our newest musicians picked up their instruments for the very first time. With the guidance of band teachers, instrument instructors, and CFHS band students serving as mentors, they explored how their instruments feel, look, and sound—squeaks, honks, and all. The benefits of Beginning Band Camp go far beyond those first notes:

  • Confidence: Students learn that every musician starts somewhere and that progress comes with practice.
  • Community: 5th and 6th graders are mentored by high school band students, building connections across grade levels.
  • Inspiration: Young musicians see where the band pathway can take them, up through concerts and high school performances.
The day concluded with a short concert for families at 3:00 p.m., featuring flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium/tuba, and percussion.
A special thank you to Esperero band director Cory Walavich for sharing photos of the day, and to all the directors, instructors, and CFHS students who made this learning experience possible. Beginning Band Camp is always a highlight of the year, where first notes become the foundation for a lifelong love of music.
